GAINING -
Ololade Ajayi
Ever since mother made her choice
I knew I would never be born
Oh how I tried to please her
When I glimpsed her placards screaming: Pro-choice!!!
I tried to do myself in
Foetal limbs curved in kick mode style
As I chewed slowly our umbilical cord
But she pays no attention to this body language
For She's newly gained a voice
And speak she must
Against 'fenemists'
The enemy of everything feminine
And to gain herself a crowd
She spreads ideas around
Thoughts, that no man would buy for free.
So out I came into the hands
Of the freedom fighters.
Black, on a cold White slab
Which earned me a quote from mother
"The beautiful ones are unborn"
It's already dark in paradise
And I was never here!!
I knew I would never be born
Oh how I tried to please her
When I glimpsed her placards screaming: Pro-choice!!!
I tried to do myself in
Foetal limbs curved in kick mode style
As I chewed slowly our umbilical cord
But she pays no attention to this body language
For She's newly gained a voice

PACKAGE IT! - - Lolade Ajayi
On a ship
to be sold at the super bowl
why? Its
thickness makes you growl
Yes, come
off your pride and howl
About how
sweetly our colors mix on an owl.
Measure
it!
The
length of your dread
for my
hair locks in dread
I knew
not yours was birthed red
so in its
envy at the salon was mine bled
Clearly
forgetting what I read
about
life not being a rosebed
until
your colored potions left my hair dead.

RHEA - - Lolade Ajayi
To make another me,
You’d have to break the
Earth
Into tiny pieces of
stars
And dance them round a
moonshine.
You’d have to
climb the universe
And sunshade it with an
eclipse
Then beam in slowly the
light of dawn
So you for remnants of
my clone
But I am Rhea
A goddess so rare
You’d never see me at
the rear
And that’s there’s no
other me.

THE DAY EKO DIED (POEM OF THE MONTH) - - Lolade
Ajayi
Like the purr of a cat
Is the cry of a new born
And like the whine of a dog
Is the wail of a mourner
So like the tears of a croc
Shed Eko's family
The night he died
We heard two voices in our head
One, a sorrowful tenor
Raised for a heirless throne
The other, a sonorous bass
Demanding his assets declaration
Little did we know
That Bobo Eko bedded at Bariga
The slave trader's wife from Portugal
Before wed-lucking
Ikorodu to Ojodu
Iyana'ba went with Yaba
While Ojota chose Okota
And even our neighbor,
Abule Egba Fell for Ojuelegba
After the ninth mile
Out popped a wee one
The seed of sin is born
Rechristened LAGOS
Hallelujah! Our voices rise
In uniformed grieve
For no longer,
Can Obalende stay in Mende
Nor Oyingbo couple with Ejigbo
Chasms now exists
Between Ajah and Ipaja
This tabooed nightmare
Can only end with a revolution
By the incestuous offsprings
Aptly named after their giddy nature
So to your forte oh Gidians!.
