BREATHE...
The stakes are high
But with rather low odds
Even the grounds not even
And with a plum, spirit no level
But we have to live
Don’t forget to breathe

When I was young, I wanted to be a ninja or a god
My weapon of choice; Zeus’ thunder bolt or a Sai
Now I’m considering a snake or a monkey
As I plan my escape into a financial heaven
Away from white collar jobs with a black tie
So choked, I can barely breathe.
how am I supposed to live?

Breathe...
Inhale - exhale
Shout, scream, wail
Let out your frustrations
You can sigh or cry but we must not die
We must live
So, don’t forget to breathe

Garri dey swell but it will never pass its level
Life is a marathon between good and evil

SHE...
She is this omnipotent, omnipresent goodness
She is the soul of greatness
But she is used and abused
Her goodwill misused
In the churches, homes and streets

I can hear her weep
She gives hope
She reminds me to love
She reminds me of her
But gives a long rope
She knows the road to her core is tough

She births passion's fire
Now, mixed with two other words
She has become vain
She weeps like rain
Not for herself, but us
We who have forgotten her
And ignored her goodness

To her I raise this toast
Celebrating her mystery
She is more than a feeling
She is more than a virtue
A phenomenon or blessing
She is the very essence of life

My goodness! I write in your name
Yet you are farthest from me
As the sun is to pluto
So pulling petals of flower
I childishly gamble on you
She love me, she love me not
She...

CLIMAX
When you are the protagonist in your own story
Its easy to always be the hero
Even nero wasn't a villain
Nor would hitler if he'd won.
This is the climax
the calm before the storm
Every 365 days ends in a 31st
The dreamers have risen, again

It is justice that we do not pen our lives
Because even the leftist who bash capitalism
Would capitalize on this
We are all the same. Dreamers

I learnt to stop day dreaming by accepting my nightmares
I've learnt the only difference between an hospital and hotel is state
of its residents
I've learnt that a falling star was never raised
I've learnt that Hope is the opiate on which religion thrives.
Im learning that my country is most hopeless because we have replaced
common sense with religion.

Religion!
Why was Jesus betrayed with a kiss
Why does the sun rise in the east
Yet it remains darkened by terror
Violent blood shed and unspeakable horrors

Before I get lost in my words
Give me my cross
And show me my Judas
Lead me on Golgotha's path
If that is the price of greatness
I will break banks
Flooding rivers with bitter tears

THE NEO-SCIENTISTS - Olamide Santos

Once I knew a little boy
One who talked of being a neo-scientist.
As I considered the misuse of the word
I heard him talk of re-inventing everything invented
I admired his dream
Singing from my ancient and modern
I tried to picture the little boy's imagination of the future
But it was not possible
what he saw was beyond my years

So I became a philosopher
But there is nothing to philosophize anymore
So I question everything and existing philosophies
First as a Marxist
Then a neo-Marxist

Gradually becoming more less Leftist
As I in debates was hardly ever right
And critiques trash the beauties that I write
Ideally becoming more realistic
Trying to succeed is becoming capitalistic
Where would I place myself in this little boy's future?

Dreams are beautiful
Even more so if we dream with open eyes
I have come to realise there are no new dreams
Just new dreamers
Recycled dreams needing re-inventing
For the dreamers who are sleeping
And the many sleeping deep
Making the grave a rich dreamland for dreams that need resurrecting
But hopefully
Not the dream of this little boy's future

Then that little boy
The neo-scientists needed dreamers
To help him paint into reality
His imagination of the future
But now what is needed is action
So says the philosopher
Who still dreams of that little boy's future

This is how we do it where I am from
We wake up way ahead of the sun
Creeping out before the first cock crows
Sometimes journeying to places we do not know
All in a bid to make endless ends meet

My village is called global now
There are hardly any more trees in the ground
Just an urban jungle of glass, stone and steel
And streams now flow online, virtual is the new real
And the honkings of cars have become music

I live in a place where abnormal is the norm
And you are the outcast if you refuse to conform
My girlfriend has a girlfriend who used to be a man
And my best friend's boyfriend has female organs
Together we all jump around like crazy baboons

But really how did we get here?
So much hate, and wars and blood shed every where
This must be an alternate universe or dimension
Some abnormal realm, this baboon nation
But how do I get back to my reality, sanity?

It seems I am living a scene of planet of the apes three
And humanity has been relegated to living in trees
Warfare is now fought by gorillas
To escape ourselves we now look to the moon and mars
Becoming baboons with alien ambitions

If only I could self-edit life
This would be how my biography would go
I was born to billionaire parents
In a private jet hanging over the Bermuda triangle
Home schooled because my brilliance is beyond class
I find poverty irritating
And religion a drug that gives Hope to those that need it
By the time I'm 19 I'm richer than my parent
So all I do is travel and party
One of my favorite destination is…
Last bus stop Oga. We done reash Ojuelgba
Waking up from my transfixed daydream
Hurriedly, I gathered myself and alighted
Only when the bus had driven off did I remember
My change…
O boy, na to waka reach shitta so?
I reach for my phone and earpiece
Needing music to accompany my exodus
After frisking myself and finding nothing
I declared, 'Oh Lord, it is finished!

Lagos does not discriminate class
Everybody is a student in this school of life
And every student has a story
Those who pass through this school
Are the brilliant ones
And those who don’t will have to learn from those who did

If all is fair in love being likened to war
Then the heart is a complex playground
The battlefield for emotional Mussolinis
With fascist sentimentality
Gaining and loosing territories
Advancing, retreating, strategizing
Philosophical cannons and bullets of words
Till poetry is born
Love is war… all is fair in both
Poetry is the fair ammunition of conquest
And even heartless men seek to conquer heart
Playing spy games and creating alliances
To tear down the Berlin wall caused by cold wars
Appointed securities put up to hide our insecurities and disappointments
Love is both socialism and democracy
Both parties losing and gaining identities
Yet both can fail resulting into anarchy
Like war all is fair in love
So we fight for it
But is love always fair?

I once had a bad watch
And watched as time got corrupted
The hour stopped every sixty minutes
Creating second hand realities

I, a self-appointed watchman
Consulted with the watch maker
How do I correct the times?
How do I reset this watch?
My fourth

He simply told me
the watch was too old to perform
The wheels rusty to work
He asked me to get a another watch
New and reliable not a second hand
Another old watch will also disappoint

Unfortunately
I have to wait for the four year cycle
When the watch shop opens again

Sending love on tour
that's being human
Not a grenade for Grande
The shattering of grand dreams
or dreams of grandeur's
Becoming a dangerous woman
The climax of an explosive event
Making corpses of people
If immortal glory is the goal
Become a Shintoist
And perform kanshi seppuku

Life has a value
And it is not the price of your soul
or dream of immortality
Not shattering the dreams of others
Not making Grande the explosive bombshell
The harbinger of grenades
And explosive bombshells
We are sending this message
So the world can know where we stand

They thought I was finished
But I came back playing the phoenix
Dust to dust they chanted
Ashes to life I replied

I have been around
And I know life is a game
I have seen quite a score and more
A decade of enlightenment

Those who can interpret my words
May not believe the meaning
And for that I am grateful
No thankful Deo optimo maximo

I am thankful to Gaia
As she affects my world
For enduring till the end
To see I came out first

I the first of the seventh anno Domini
A gate keeper of the second half
I have been around
I have had my shares of life’s sweet bitterness

I have survived beautiful conflicts
I am not unscathed
But my scars are testimonies
And for that I am thankful

All thanks to God.
But the best thanks are yet to come
Deo volente the world will sing my fame
And remember me when they look to the stars

Being vain
This is what it means to be a human being
Seeking acceptance and accolades
I don’t do it for money but fame
My actions are selfless
But I put myself first
Then I lose myself

We celebrate high achievers
Students with high grades
Staff with high output
Happiness has been relegated
Success is all that counts
And too often we count blessings
Comparing distance and bearings

Being the vain beings we have been
Tomorrow like yesterday, will remember today
Through the eyes of movers and shakers
Moments without events fade by
So we remember the dead
When we have the living, just barely alive
Till the moment life slips away

We plan for the future
Sowing seeds and waiting for rain
Even the weather forecast could be inaccurate
wind tossed in hurricane
I become vain
That loose feeling of losing myself
Telling myself, it was never a vanity quest

Tell the night soil-man
He stinks of your money
Convince the honey bee
that the golden-black drop
isn't just sweet shit
It’s all a matter of the consciousness
Self-deceit is a shallow dream
Deep dreams are reserved for gods
Idle men are those without dreams
Getting by, faking their consciousness

This is an ode to the heroes of faith
Never losing consciousness
Even in unconsciousness
Those who rise above mortal dreams
Sailing above obstacles into godly reality
Only when faced by challenging concussion,
do we really become conscious
Awakened to life's reality
Yet reality is just a dream
And its interpretation is a matter of our consciousness

CROUCHING TIGER... - Olamide Santos
You are my bottle of pain - bitter and sweet
A creative potion
Sourly, sugary, saline tears you are
You inspire me but hold me back
Let me loose and I’ll serenade your senses
Loving you till death do us part
Pain and laughter are songs composed in the heart
But like a broken string of a guitar.
I can hurt you when I’m broken
Strung, I give the sweetest vibes
After the damage we can mend fences
A heaving volcano I am
Fighting to cage my eruption
But all I ever emit is fumes and smoke
I've never given my all thus far
My emotions are my literal tiger, you say
My words are life and death - I slay
My words carry oily eloquence
My words are fire
Will I kindle this fire in my own pond of oil?
Will I slay my human consciousness for creativity's sake?
Olamide Santos

The lion doesn’t dog its prey
It stalks and pounces
The wolf pack of six
Is not the same as a six pack wolf
Nothing is achieved without risk
To be the head of the pack
One must think outside the park

Raised to praise
I kill with words
Alphabets become swords
But they say I’m deep
Only if they knew I drown everyday
Witty wordplays and puns
Have made me an abusive god

If I raised my dead
How long will they live
Before I kill them again?
I resurrect my dead art
Pumping life into my heart
But failing, I plagiarize myself
To keep up appearance

Stars stay sky high
I want to be deep
A deep star
Can I have both?
I want it deep
I want to be a star
I become nothing

Olamide Santos

What's heavy metal without the base guitar
What's a structure without a base
Or pure thoughts with base intentions
What's the basis of faith
What's faith without love
What's love without a lover
What's a lover who doesn’t believe
How does the plug feel
Finding a socket to connect
And having power flow through
How does the felled tree feel
Being disconnected from its roots
Or a volcano burning its own base
Why does everything in front of a camera look happy.
Why are we alive if we can’t be free

Life is a game with conflicting rules
But in this conflict I find solace
Knowing I have deep roots in you
In the warmth of your beautiful face
It’s like another universe within your space
I discover myself more and more
We may end up being two sides of a coin
Nevertheless, the same coin
You see now, how you have reached my depths
saving me from drowning myself
Hope...
That's what you are
Hope that the past and the sins of yesterday
Are eclipsed, with the birth of a new sun
And that, dead dreams, can resurrect

Where there is a will, there’s a way
Where there is night, there will be day
There is no need for light without darkness
Every building has a foundation
Maybe you are mine
My rock star, Sinabung, light and insanity
You slay when you sway
Like the pendulum of a grandpa clock
The steady, liquid, lazy flow in your stride
Feline perfection that steals my heart
I have found a three pin plug
For a two pin socket.
We were created for each other
But do not match.
I will trim my ego to fit your heart
When next we meet
Hopefully, under the mistletoe
It will be plug and play

MY WORDS ARE FIRE - - OLAMIDE SANTOS

My words are fire
So when I speak
I seem to emit fumes
Passion that becomes currency
Giving my rants and ramblings value

My words are fire
All I did was whisper into her ears
And warmed her heart
She opened up her soul
And consumed all of my pride
But as I began to speak louder
I burnt her from the inside out

My words are fire
When I pray
I heat up heaven to a boiling point
Making even angels weep
Only their saltless tears
Can cool my flaming tongue

If the words I speak
Makes anyone uncomfortable
It’s really not my fault
So I make no apologies
 My words are fire
And I also carry the scars
Burnt marks and ashes of dead skin

Fire burns and consumes
Fire cleanses and purifies
Fire keeps us warm
Fire is both death and life
My words are fire

BE THE EAGLE - - Olamide Santos

Eagles may not fly
In very turbulent storms
Like a huricane or whirlwind
Doesn't mean after the storm
They dont resume flight
Great men will face
Troubling times
But a retreat is not a pass
Or excuse to quit
Be like the eagle
Be the eagle

The eagle is audacious enough
To own the sky
Soaring as high as it can
It will only descend
To feed, rest or mate
But it's decsent is not permanent
It knows where it belongs
And where it belongs
Is not on the ground
Reptiles belong on the ground
Eagles feed on reptiles
Dont be a reptile
Be the eagle

Eagles have a the keenest of sight
They do not struggle in flight
So if you do not have a vision
Or keep flapping about
strugling to to stay mid air
Then you may be a goldcrest
Or the Red-cheeked cordon-bleu
But in the movie called nature
The eagle is the star
The others are extras
Making the eagle look good
Dont be one of the extras
Be the star
Be the eagle

Olamide Santos
